Life Aboard a Skipjack!
You think your life is tough, think about this; five men used to go on a skip jack for a period of time. A skip jack is a fairly large sailboat that was used for oystering on the Chesapeake Bay. The five men went on the skip jack to go oystering . The skip jack was small for five men. The ceilings were so low that you couldn’t even stand up. It was so cold that when you breathed you got ice cycles in your hair. The skipjack had small beds; there were 3 beds in one small room and 2 in the other room. The room with 3 beds was also the kitchen. It had a small stove. Even though conditions were uncomfortable, the food was good. That was because good food made a crew that wouldn’t quit. Did you know, the skip jack was powered by a dinghy!
