The Foods of Turkey ; a photo essay by Eliza and Abby (with help from mom)

Eating at a Asian Resturant in Istanbul

We were on the Asian side of Istanbul so we desided to try some Chinese/Japanese food there.  I (Eliza) got Sushi. The sushi was wrapped up in a cone shaped thing.  Abby got won- ton soup, that was basicly the same as in Baltimore.  Our mom got rice.  Our dad got chicken, the chicken was very spicy so we ate the rice with it and it tasted great.  We all shared every thing and all had a great time!!

Is Eliza in Trouble?

In this picture, I (Eliza) am not in trouble, my mom, dad, and Abby liked it in the sun and I liked it in the shade.  but, the  flash from the camera made it look like I was in the sun....

Oh, I almost forgot that you wanted to hear about the food.  Our mom got Turkish ravioli (the ravioli was very small, like a pinch size, and is served with a yogurt sauce on top.  Everyone had some and really liked it), I (Eliza)  got rice, Abby got tost which was like a cheese quesada, and our dad got a chicken sandwich.  It was all very good.  And the cook helped us find our way home by bringing us to the right bus stop!

"Self Catering"

In Cappadocia, we mostly ate at home.  This was for three reasons, it was cheaper, it was convenient and it was our only option!!!  There was only a Kofte shop (a sandwhich made with Turkish meatballs) and a Pide shop to eat out at.  Bread, fruit and cheese were some of the only things we could get the first morning.  This is a picture of our first breakfast on the terrace in Ortahisar.  All the food was fresh and tasty.  Later, we realized we realized we could make hash browns, and that was really, really yummy.

Buying Fresh Fruit

In the picture above, we are at the open air bizarre buying fresh fruit (this was in Avanos in Cappadocia).  As you can see, I (Abby) was a little late for the picture!  The fruit and veggie were amazing.  One cantalope was about the size of a stuffed backpack!  All of the cabbage heads were just as big as the cantalog.  The fruit tasted great!

Chocolate

Sometimes we figured out foods we could make that were very delicious.  We have Hatice and her parents over at our house for dinner.  We had pasta and homemade sauce for dinner.  (Dad made the sauce from scratch... this confused them because men don't cook in Ortahisar and everything you ate in that town was made from scratch!)  In this picture we are eating chocolate fondue for dessert.  We were eating bananas, apples and clemenitines dipped in melted chocolate.

MMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... the chocolate fondue was good!

Pide Resturant in Ortahisar

On the last week we were in Ortahisar, we found the Pide resturant.  We had to walk a little ways to get to the resturant and it took us 3 trips before we actually got to the place when they were open and serving Pida.  Pida is the Turkish pizza (it is pronounced like pizza but with a "d" instead of a "z".)  It is really, really good!

Pide with the Findikes

The Findikes took us out to eat in Konya at one of the best Pide resturants in the country (I guess that would mean one of the best Pide places in the world!).  Each Pide is over 3 feet long!  Each on is meant to be eaten by one person.  They said that their son will eat 2 or 3 by himself!
