Our First Turkish Meal

Notice all the birds....

Yes, those pretty, pretty birds!

Fortunately, the water fountain does actually work so you can clean up after thos wonderful birds!

What they sell on the Street

They sell chestnuts and corn on the cob on the steet.  The chestnuts were so good we had to buy a second bag!

Blue Mosque

We are about to enter the Blue Mosque.  Everyone has to take off their shoes and women must wear a scarf.  Doesn't Mayaugust look grandmotherly?

Blue Mosque

We are inside the Blue Mosque.   A very nice man approached us just outside the Blue Mosque, asking us to come look at his family's carpet shop.  After we politely turned him down, he proceeded to show us around the area and explain some of the important Muslim rituals and practices (such as washing hands, face and feet before entering the Mosque).  He was very friendly, and the New Yorker in us made us very suspect.  But he truely was just very friendly.  We will run into him again in Istanbul... hopefully we will get a chance to tell you about that.

Title.

The Bisilica Cistern was made during the Byzantine Empire to collect water from the aquaducts.  The columns were re-used from even earlier ancient ruins.

Bisilica Cistern

Cool Medusa head.  Was it put in upside down on purpose or did they just throw it in there?

Tea on the Ferry

We crossed the Bosperus River to get to the Asian shore of Istanbul.  We enjoyed our first cup of tea served in these tulip shaped glasses.

Turkish Delights!

Instead of shopping plaza's on the side of highways, there area wonderful bizarres.  We never made it to the famous grand bizarre, but we enjoyed these smaller ones.  Here we stopped for some Turkish Delights.  Some were really tasty but watch out for the ones that taste like floor cleaner!
